There’s a lot involved in the Medicare enrollment process, including a short timeframe in which you can enroll right when you turn 65. While you could wait until the big day to figure things out, we like to recommend the less stressful approach of preparing beforehand. Here are some ways you can prepare for Medicare enrollment.

  • Schedule an appointment with an insurance agent: One of the best things you can do to prepare for Medicare enrollment is schedule an appointment with someone who can walk you through each part of Medicare and the enrollment process.   • Know your Medicare Supplement Insurance options: You will likely want to supplement your Medicare insurance with a supplementary insurance option to make the out-of-pocket costs more affordable. If you haven’t decided beforehand, we can discuss your options to decide which is best for you.
  • Understand your eligibility: You are generally eligible for Medicare enrollment once you reach the age of 65 or older, are disabled and have received Social Security benefits, or are diagnosed with ESRD or ALS. We can discuss your eligibility before your enrollment periods.
  • Know your enrollment periods: Medicare enrollment periods include your initial enrollment period that lasts for seven months after you become eligible. Medicare open enrollment period that lasts from October 15th to December 7th during which you can join an advantage plan or make necessary changes to your existing coverage, and the general enrollment period that lasts from January 1st to March 31st during which you can sign up for and enroll in Original Medicare in case you missed your initial enrollment period.
